Sonoita Valley Grasslands

Grasslands and rolling hills

Stephen is working with Jane and Carl Bock on a book on the grasslands on the Sonoita Valley, currently titled Sonoita Plain: Views from a Southwestern Grassland. Jane and Carl are the authors of The View From Bald Hill, the story of their 30 years of fieldwork at the Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch, managed by the National Audubon Society. This book will discuss the issues involved in managing the few remaining grasslands in the Southwest, including grazing, wildlife, plants, rainfall, fire, and development, among others. Stephen will provide the photographs, taken throughout the seasons, before and after the Ryan fire that swept through the valley in the spring of 2002.
